Who is Eric McErlain?

I was born in New York City and raised on the Long Island. I left Long Island for good in 1985 to go to college in Washington, D.C. at Catholic University where I got my undergraduate degree in Politics, and spent much of my time working at the school newspaper. I graduated in 1989, and have lived in the Washington area ever since (stints in D.C., Alexandria, McLean and Crystal City) and now live in Reston, Virginia.

After graduation, I started a career in communications and public relations in the high tech business. Today, I'm Vice President at a public relations firm Washington, D.C.

At one Fortune 500 company where I worked as a speech writer, I concentrated on Internet and advanced telecom technology, writing speeches, policy statements and video scripts in support of a number of senior executives.

Leaving there shortly following a merger, I joined a fast-growing Internet service provider, initially as the company's chief speechwriter Besides writing and preparing presentations for the company's senior executive staff, I ran an aggressive speakers bureau. In 1998, the last full year before I arrived, the company's executives only delivered 75 speeches. In 1999 and 2000, my staff and I booked over 400.

Outside of Off Wing Opinion, I have worked from time to time as a freelance writer. My writing has appeared in the Washington Post, the Washington Times, Pro Football Weekly and PR News. For a time, I worked as a freelancer, writing for executives at the Community of Science, CACI, and the Transportation Security Agency.

My work at Off Wing has earned me opportunities to write elsewhere. In October 2006, I started writing a weekly column on the NHL for NBC Sports. I first wrote for AOL's NFL Fanhouse in August 2006, and became lead blogger at the NHL Fanhouse in March 2007. As part of that project, I was responsible for recruiting some of the best hockey bloggers in the business. I've also guest posted at Deadspin.
