Espo To Give Another Woman
Espo To Give Another Woman A Shot At Pro Hockey: Back in 1992, when he was the General Manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Phil Esposito gave Manon Rheaume, a feamle goalie, a shot to play in an NHL uniform. Now, he's doing it again:
Hayley Wickenheiser could be on the brink of making some more hockey history.
Former NHL star and current Cincinnati Cyclones (ECHL) minority owner Phil Esposito has reportedly offered the Canadian Olympic star a 15-game tryout, giving Wickenheiser the chance to become the first female positional player in minor-league hockey.
"We're interested in her because she can play," Esposito told the Toronto Globe and Mail on Tuesday. "My feeling is that I've seen her play and I think she can handle it. And if she can, then why not bring her here."
Wickenheiser, a cousin of the late-NHL player Doug, helped lead the Canadian Women's ice hockey team to an Olympic gold medal in Salt Lake City last February. She's one of the top, if not the best women's, ice hockey player in the world, and it would be a kick to see if she had what it takes to succeed with a minor league club.
