More On Expos To D.C.
The Washington Post had two stories on the possibility the Montreal Expos might move to Washington, D.C. over the weekend. The first concerning the fact that Major League Baseball (MLB) has contacted localities here and in Portland, Oregon about just such a possibility:
Major League Baseball, in its first step toward relocating the Montreal Expos by 2004, this week notified government officials in several jurisdictions -- including the District, Northern Virginia and Portland, Ore. -- they will be invited to meet with the relocation committee as early as late February, sources familiar with the process said yesterday.
Government officials were told by the relocation committee that potential ownership groups should not be part of their delegations, sources said. This would put the responsibility on local and state governments to tell MLB how much it is willing to invest in attracting a team.
"MLB wants to know, 'What evidence do you have your market can support a franchise?' and 'Where are you going to play and how is that stadium going to be paid for?' " said a source, who added that the committee would seek additional information. "In a perfect world, jurisdictions should have all approvals in place and money set aside."
The Post buried another story in Saturday's paper saying that an Expos move to Washington was all but inevitable, with MLB ready to pay off Orioles owner Peter Angelos to get him to back off of his efforts to block a possible Expos move to Washington.

Much as I would like to believe that MLB's latest move represents a genuine exploration of prospective relocation sites, Washington has been jerked around with tantalizing statements from Selig, et al. too many times to take this at face value. The Washington Post itself deserves blame for treating the Orioles as a "home team" in their Sports section, thereby playing into Peter Angelos's bogus claims that he would suffer unduly if Washington got a team.
