Why Lott Is Really Toast Now
I haven't said much about Trent Lott over the past week. There are plenty of other bloggers who have dealt with the situation with exactly the import it deserves, and let me say for the record that I'm firmly in the dump Lott camp. As a kid who grew up in the New York suburbs, and one who has clear memories of the three great Americans featured in my first school pageant as George Washington, Abe Lincoln and the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Lott has always seemed to be sort of a space alien to me (look for him for sure in the third installement of Men In Black) -- a feeling that only grew as the story has unfolded over the past week.
The question now is whether or not Lott can survive as Majority Leader, or even as a member of the Senate. After what I just saw on my television a few minutes ago, I think I can say with confidence that Lott is doomed.
A few minutes ago on ESPN's Sports Center, White House press secretary Ari Fleischer made an unexpected appearance in the prelude to Chris Berman's "Plays of the Week." Berman is out sick, and his colleague Stuart Scott is sitting in for him this week. Here's what Fleischer had to say in an appearance that must have been taped some time early on Sunday:
No truth to the rumor that the President has issued an Executive Order to replace Chris Berman. However, the Administration does throw its full support behind Stuart Scott.
Oh, and when he said it, he had a pretty big grin on his face.
I think it's safe to say that Fleischer wouldn't have made an appearance like this on just any Sunday that Berman was out sick, and the fact that he did is an ominous sign for Lott. After all, if the White House is willing to let somebody like Fleischer poke fun at Lott like this, it should tell us all we need to know about which way they think things are heading.
Time to get ready for a new Majority Leader. As for Lott, I'm sure he's got a great future ahead of him as head of the Pascagoula Chamber of Commerce.
