Not Another Day At The Office

Today is shaping up to be a tough one for Jim Vandermeer, a defenseman for the Philadelphia Flyers. He's up in Boston today, playing with the rest of the Flyers against the struggling Boston Bruins.

During the first period today, Vandermeer, who only has 12 penalty minutes in 21 games with the Flyers this year (though he has piled up the minutes in the minors), got into a fight with the Bruins' resident agitator, P.J. Stock. Normally, Vandermeer crosses folks up because he leads with his left when he fights. Unfortunately for him, Stock, who is ambidexterous, was able to turn the tables on him. No matter, though Stock left the ice to the cheers of the Boston faithful, it was clear that Vandermeer got the better of the fight.

Which meant payback was yet to come. In the second period, Vandermeer was at it again, this time against the hulking presence of Kryzstof Oliwa -- a player who understands he doesn't draw a paycheck for his finesse game. In this fight, Vandermeer was only giving away 4 inches and about 35 pounds, and quite frankly, looked a little tired as Oliwa scored a decision. Considered a borderline prospect while he was in the minors, it appears Vandermeer might have found a useful function in Philadelphia.
