I Know Why The Caged Bird Singhs
Congratulations to Vijay Singh, who won the Byron Nelson Championship on Sunday, and as a special reward, decided to take next week off, and avoid a possible collission with Annika Sorenstam at the Colonial next weekend:
Singh insisted his decision not to play next week's Colonial was not related to Sorenstam, but merely a chance to take some time off and enjoy his latest win.
''It has nothing to do with the controversy,'' Singh said. ''I've played in four straight tournaments, and I need a break.''
Singh said he had promised his wife he would take the week off if he won Sunday.
''It was decision not taken at all this week. It was a two-week affair,'' Singh said. ''You know, I said if I won a tournament, I would take a week off. It just came at the right time, I guess.''
I'll take Singh at his word, but for the rest of the field, having Sorenstam at the Colonial might be a little more problematic. Thomas Bonk of the LA Times has the lowdown.
To close, former world-class distance swimmer Diana Nyad talks some sense about men, women, and athletic competition, over in the New York Times.
UPDATE: ESPN.com's David Lefort says the real story about Singh is not his withdrawl from the Colonial, but rather a recent streak that's marked him as the hottest golfer on the PGA Tour right now.
POSTSCRIPT: For those of you who can't get enough of 13-year old phenom Michelle Wie, here's a feature from Jeff Meron of ESPN.com.
