Lunchtime Digest

Fleeing Castro. The Negro Leagues. The U.S. Army. The Majors. It's all part of the life of 64-year old Pedro Sierra, back in baseball after a 27-year absence. Jon Siegel of the Washington Times has his story.

The Washington Redskins are back in court with groups claiming to represent Native Americans over the rights to use their logo and name. Owner Dan Snyder won't give in for anything. The Native American groups can't be bought. I say the case goes as high as it can in our courts system.

Lance Armstrong maintained his 67-second lead in the Tour de France today, setting up a showdown in Saturday's time trial with former Tour champion Jan Ulrich. It's been a while since the Tour came down to the last day, but if the time trial is close, that's what we might have.

Recovering from a groin inury, Mike Piazza is considering a future at first base.

The Chicago Sun-Times' Rick Telander saw Seabiscuit, and he loved it.

New York says goodbye to Sprewell. Amazing how the toughest city in the league helped a near-criminal rehab his image. Philly says goodbye to Van Horn, and there seem to be few tears. What is Knicks GM Scott Layden really thinking?

And to end on a positive note: with Uday Hussein dead and gone for good, the athletes of Iraq are looking forward to the future (registration required) for the first time in a long time.
