Flagged For Insufficient Enthusiasm

I'm not much of a college football fan -- at least not until New Year's Day. And as a graduate of an obscure Division III university, I've never really had any strong rooting interest. For the most part, I got into the habit of rooting for underdogs. Last season, I rooted for Ohio State, just because my Godchild was born in Columbus.

More recently, I've taken to rooting for any result that would expose the Bowl Championship Series as the joke that it is.

That's worked for a couple of years. That was, until I started dating a woman who graduated from the University of Michigan. Now life is a little more dangerous.

My first big test came yesterday afternoon while watching the Rose Bowl between Michigan and USC. I failed.

I played a good game, that was until USC's Ryan Kileen missed a field goal with a little more than 11 minutes remaining in the second quarter.

"Damn," I muttered under my breath. Or at least I thought so.

"Excuse me," came the rejoinder from across the room.

"What's wrong?" I replied, thinking there still might be a way out of this.

She wasn't buying.

"Don't give me that, you're rooting for USC so you can say you were right about the BCS."

Some days having the girlfriend as a regular reader can come back to bite you.

I've had to tell all my Michigan friends that it's just a demonstration of the power of the Belichick effect. "See? Look how good Parcells was this year, too. Belichick is so great, he even makes ex-coaches of his teams better."
