Time Out Of Mind

A graphic on ESPN 2's broadcast tonight of the Flyers-Wings game from Detroit read as follows:

"The Last Time"
Philly Went To The Finals
21 teams in the NHL
Ronald Reagan was President
Titanic wreckage discovered
First class stamp: $.20
Top movie: Ghostbusters

Indeed, all these things were true when Philly went to the Finals in 1987. Of course, somebody seemed to forget that the Flyers went to the Finals again in 1997, when they were swept by the Red Wings, four games to none. Though they corrected their mistake midway through the third period, it was pretty glaring. Something tells me somebody in the booth got yelled at tonight.

"Ghostbusters" came out in 1984. did they mean "Ghostbusters II"?

Ghostbusters II came out in 1989. The Titanic wreckage was discovered in 1985.

They pretty much dropped the ball completely on this one.

Not surprising at all, considering that the ESPN hockey crowd are little more than a bunch of excitable, attention-deficit yahoos. Any combination of them form the worst broadcasting team in the world.

Apparently it's much more difficult to be an ESPN Sportscenter anchor than it is to be a guy in the truck coming up with these stats.

Could you see the tag line for "Workin' in a truck stat guy at the Predators/Flames game-Dream Job"? Might be a tougher sell, even in these, the salad days of reality TV.
