Who's Your Daddy?
Mike Mussina, that's who, if you're the Boston Red Sox. Now Yankees fans can't get enough of it. I was going to turn this game off, but with a perfect game through five innings, there's no way I can stop watching now. BTW -- what was MLB thinking when it put the "Who's your Daddy?" t-shirt into circulation? It's got to be right up there with the Internet pecker. UPDATE: Here's hoping Fox's Tim McCarver has a backup plan for his career -- because New York Mets pitcher Al Leiter has been superior in the booth all game long. Leiter is so good it's almost like he's inside Mussina's head. UPDATE, END OF SIX: Mussina still perfect. And to think pitching was supposed to be New York's weakness heading into the postseason. And when you get a chance, read this piece from Richard Sandomir on dueling scoreboxes. Sandomir also writes about Fox's Steve "Psycho" Lyons, who made some boneheaded comments about the Dodgers Shawn Green and his decision how to handle whether or not to play on Yom Kippur. As far as I'm concerned, Green's decision was purely between him and that great big Dodger in the sky. Anyone who says anything else is just an intruder. David Pinto is following things too. 7TH INNING UPDATE: After 6-1/3, Mark Bellhorn doubles to the base of the left field wall. Perfect game gone, no-hitter gone. But still a brilliantly pitched post season game. Congrats to Moose. ANOTHER 7TH INNING UPDATE: Moose only managed to get one more out, and the Sox have tagged him for three runs -- that means the showers for Mussina. WILL THEY EVER GET OUT OF THE 7TH?: Jason Varitek clubs a Tanyon Sturtze pitch over the right field wall, and now it's 8-5. Uh oh. But Sturtze Ks Cabrera to end the inning. 8TH INNING UPDATE: David Ortiz triples to the top of the left field wall, clearing the bases. It's 8-7, with the tying run at the plate in the form of Kevin Millar. And in comes Mariano Rivera. Unreal. . . And Millar pops out to end the inning. In a lot of ways, tonight's game reminds me of Game Six of the 1999 NLCS between the Braves and the Mets. Like the Red Sox, the Mets fell behind early that night, only to lose in the end. And I have to wonder out loud if it would have been better emotionally for the Red Sox to go down without a fight tonight, rather than come so close only to lose. Stay tuned. BOTTOM OF THE 8TH: Bernie Williams hits a 2-out, 2-run double to make it 10-7. Williams goes to third on the throw. Keith Foulke is in now, and you have to wonder what Francona was waiting for to pull Timlin. TOP OF 9TH: Red Sox put runners on first and second with one out, and Rivera gets Bill Mueller to ground into a double play. This has got to hurt for the Red Sox.
