Is Russia A Viable Option?

Joe LaPointe of the New York Times takes a look at the lockout-fueled rise of European ice hockey, and asks an interesting question:

The migration to Europe could be a factor in the negotiations toward a new collective bargaining agreement and it illustrates the changing economic dynamics of an increasingly global sport.

But the long-term ramifications are unclear, particularly in Russia, where talented players are working for surprisingly high salaries in a nation where capitalism is new and evolving. Could hockey be headed for a new world order?

I suppose you could play in Russia -- as long as you're willing to get along without certain Western luxuries like relibale electricity, potable water and the rule of law. Click here for a recent report based on former Islanders goalie Garth Snow's experience in St. Petersburg.

You're exaggerating a bit with the comments about electricity and potable water, but you're right that players won't want to play there, long term. It might help the players during the lockout but it's a long way from "a new world order."
