Skitching And Snagging In Paradise
In a fun rememberance of the Blizzard of 1978, Chris Lynch revives talk of the ancient, and lost art of snagging, or skitching as it was known on Long Island:
Snagging was my favorite and I plan a post soon just on the art of snagging. In other parts of the country snagging was also known as "skitching" or bumper riding. Basically, you would sneak behind a car, crouch down and grab the bumper and then ski away as the car pulled off. It was great! Snagging is one of those activities that most of the people from my generation and geography did but that is no longer done by today's generation (lots of reasons that I'll probably address in a longer post). I'll suffice it to say that I loved snagging.
And we didn't wear no stinking bike helmets back then either. Quite frankly, it's a wonder any of us survived.

Skitching at my buddy's cottage in northern Quebec was the closest I've ever come to death, or at least suffering severe brain damange.
Good times.

I never skitched or snagged but picture this... a truck with 4 wheel drive, 40 feet of rope and a tractor tire inner tube. Now get the driver of the truck to do donuts in the middle of a snow covered potato field as fast as they can until the centrifigal force sends you flying off the tube. Good times. And we used to do that at a high school winter camp. No way parents would let anyone do that to their kids these days.
