NFL Sunday Ticket Price Hike Has Customers Angry

Long-time Off Wing reader Marc Hoff passes along some interesting info:

Yo Eric,

Check out the firestorm over DirecTV's 2005 NFL Sunday Ticket pricing ...

$219 to renew ($199 to auto-renew),
but the real kicker is an additional $99 (the "SuperFan package") to get the HD games that we got last year for no additional charge.

For those of you scoring at home, that's a 66% increase ($298 up from $179).

This customer is inches away from canceling the whole ball of wax.

Ouch. That's getting pretty pricey. Click here for some of the invective:

This is rdiculous this may be it for me I will have to think long and hard about this one. What a rip off. I guess npow looking at cable may in fact may not be such a bad idea as ST was really the only thing keeping frpom looking at cable . . .

And thats the "early bird" price. LOL They should introduce a financing plan for it, 26 bucks a month. Thats still high though. Infact some people pay less than that for VOIP for an entire year of local and LD phone service . . .

Not only is this a ripoff, but why on god's green earth would they bundle HD and interactive, given that NO CURRENT RECEIVERS can do both . . .

Wow. I can afford this but damn, I am really debating based on pure spite. Especially since I dont watch every single weekend, the price becomes much higher per Sunday. I am really going to struggle with this. I am getting Dish installed Monday for their HD. If the Dish looks good, its going to really put me on the fence. Sunday Ticket HD and Tivo are really the things they keep me with D*. Tivo no longer the chosen DVR and now this. Wow, things to think aboutl!

There's plenty more where that came from. Looks like the NFL might have a little problem on their hands.

Well, just a couple things here. If this person is getting ticked off at DirecTV over this, then I'm surprised. Some of their pricing is stupid ridiculous as compared to cable especially, and I don't think the regular packages on Dish even compare.

There IS already a way to "finance" the football package, I believe you can do it over 3 or 4 months or something along those lines. That's what I do - typically the first charge happens in June, I think.

The HD thing is definitely an issue, I can see that being a cause for concern. However, ANYONE who says they're going to ditch out on this package and then not a) hobnob at a friend's who has it or b) go out and spend FAR more money between beers and grub on a weekly basis to get the same level of entertainment is kidding themselves. It's still the best investment you can make if you like watching all the games, even if it were at $279 or whatever with the HD package. I would spend at least $50 a Sunday if I went out to watch games all afternoon, and four or so of those net out evenly against the auto-renew.

As for DirecTV's other programming, the fact that you can purchase the premium sets of channels for $12 or less per bucket is insane - you purchase HBO 1&2 on the cable system where I am and it's like $20 a month - I have seven HBOs with DirecTV. And the fact that buying additional packages decreases the price for each additional one is flat out amazing. If anything DirecTV proves that the cable folks are just nickel and diming you to death with the way they whine over carrying programming. If DTV can hack it, so can they.
