Belmont Picks
The Belmont Stakes will be run on Saturday afternoon, and my Dad is back with his picks. To recap, he nailed Giacomo in the Derby. And though he missed on Afleet Alex in the Preakness, he still managed to hit on the place and show horses. Considering Giacomo was a 50-1 longshot in the Derby, he's well in the money.
For Triple Crown novices, keep in mind that the Belmont is something of a different animal. At a mile and a half, it's the longest of the Triple Crown races, and I've seen plenty of favorites jump out to early leads only to falter in the last quarter mile -- in my mind, never more famously than in 1979 when jockey Ronnie Franklin jumped to an early lead on Derby and Preakness winner Spectacular Bid, only to fade to third and drop the race to Coastal.
With that, here's Dad:
This is a very tough one to call. These horses seem to be less caliber than ones which ran the Belmont in the recent past. No clear favorite for the distance.
7 Andromeda's Hero: Is the only one I think can run full for the mile and a half.
8 Reverberate: Recent second in the Peter Pan.
5 Giacomo: Will give it a game try but will come up short.
9 Afleet Alex: A bit too far for it to run.
So the magic numbers this time are 7-8-5-9. Do with them what you will.
