Freddy, Freddy, Freddy
2005 hasn't exactly been the best of times for the designated savior of U.S. Soccer, Freddy Adu. His play for D.C. United has been decidedly lackluster, and his performance earlier this Summer in the FIFA under-20 World Championship wasn't particularly notable either.
However, on Saturday afternoon in Carson, California, the world finally got a good look at what the all the fuss over Adu has been about.

It's a heck of a goal. I was a bit unimpressed with the challenge by Ugo Ihemelu, who's usually better than that. But on reflection, it's actually more impressive to see Freddy fight off the foul. He'll need to develop that kind of physical strength to really shine on the world stage.
The question for Freddy isn't whether he's ready to dominate now... clearly he's not. But heck, he just turned 16 last month. There aren't many kids who can play top-level soccer at that age (though there are a few). He's going to make mistakes, and only regular playing time will help fight that. He's getting an average of 60 minutes a game this year, which feels about right. If his physical development keeps pace, we may have a lot of fun watching him in 2010.

Freddy actually has been OK for D.C. this year, and the whole team seems to have a new attitude. When they beat San Jose 3-0, his contribution on the scoresheet was just one assist, but he drew the defense's attention all day. On the third goal, two defenders followed his dummy run and left Christian Gomez alone at the top of the box. Oops.
