Panthers Cheerleaders Arrested

Some interesting news out of Tampa:

Two Carolina Panthers cheerleaders were arrested early Sunday morning at a Tampa nightclub after an incident that reportedly began with the two of them...

As for the rest of the story, well, let's just say that it plays like one of those late night movies on Cinemax, with a possible case of identity theft to boot.

Some folks in Charlotte are all over the story -- here's a brief note from the Charlotte Observer to start.

Click here for the mug shots of the two persons arrested. Then click here to visit the Web page for the Top Cats, Carolina's cheerleading squad.

And if you're so inclined, click here for some video of a local Charlotte news station trying to chase down the cheerleaders in a Tampa parking lot after some of their pals bailed them out.

Something tells me I'll be following this story very carefully.

I think it's important to note that we shouldn't condemn all cheerleaders for the irresponsible acts of just a few. So why not stop by the Professional Cheerleader Blog, and meet some of those talented and ambitious young women. And once you're done there, take a look at some of the costumes these young women dressed up in for Halloween.

There are literally no limits to the creative impulse.

Primary assist to PJ Swensen, secondary to Colby Cosh.

UPDATE: Welcome to readers from The Corner.

Deadspin has more. More here.

Now it looks like the family of the cheerleader who got defamed in all of this might sue the cheerleader who impersonated her.

Panthers head coach John Fox is doing the Sgt. Schultz impersonation. Check out some of the comments here.

And for some reason I can't fathom, my old friends at the Professional Cheerleader Blog are ignoring this story. NB: As of last night, a photo of one of the cheerleaders charged in the incident, Renee Thomas, was featured on their site.

And apparently, cheerleaders going on the road to follow the team is something that's happened before, like when some Vikings cheerleaders went to Carolina and visited with the home town squad.

We're at a very interesting juncture on this story. It's broken big, but all of the basic facts you need have already been published. Most of the new stuff you see in the next few hours will just repeat the same old details.
