More on Jiri

Jiri is back in the hospital - Fischer scheduled to have more tests

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jiri Fischer went to the hospital for more tests this week after experiencing "a brief, abnormal cardiac rhythm," the team announced Wednesday.

According to the statement released by the Red Wings, Fischer was resting at home on Monday evening when he experienced the abnormal rhythm and he returned to Detroit Medical Center for further testing and observation.

Fischer was released Wednesday and is scheduled to have more tests at the University of Michigan Medical Center. The statement did not specify when Fischer would have those tests.

Trying to understand what is going on requires Hercule Poirot like armchair detective skills.

Ponder - how did they know that he had an abnormal rhythm? Most likely he is wearing an event monitor. Event monitors are continuous EKG tracings. The patient (Jiri) wears EKG electrodes. The monitor continuously records rhythm tracings. When the patient develops an abnormal feeling, he/she presses a button and the monitor saves the rhythm (there are a variety of methods used for this, including telephone monitoring.

If this assumption is correct (and I would bet money on the first assumption), we would then surmise that Jiri had some short rapid heart rhythm. This could be either ventricular or supraventricular (now I am getting very technical).

The rhythm probably suggests that an electrophysiologic study would be worthwhile. I suspect that is why he is going to the University of Michigan - for electrophysiologic testing.

I will continue to follow the story - and will try to answer questions.
