Marcus Vick Is A Punk
I've been chary about passing any sort of judgement on Virginia Tech quarterback Marcus Vick and his well-chronicled run-ins with the law. It's all too often the case that the impression we get about individuals through the prism of the media doesn't tell us the whole story about what we're seeing.
But what I just saw a few moments ago in the Gator Bowl told me all I need to know about Ron Mexico's little brother.
After failing to find a receiver while dropping back to pass in the waning moments of the first half, Vick decided to take off and run. After getting tackled about a yard shy of a first down, Vick took a moment to stomp his cleat into the calf of Louisville lineman Elvis Dumervil while Dumervil was lying on the ground defenseless.
There was even some unintentional irony, as Vick's infraction -- one that didn't draw a flag but should have been a personal foul -- actually initially escaped the notice of NBC's broadcasting crew because of an in-stadium interview with the elder Vick.
It's all been part of a sloppy first half for the Hokies, as Louisville has been frustrating Vick and the VT offense all game long. Something tells me now that Vick's previous behavior isn't exactly atypical.

It's precisely this kind of crap that made me wish Marcus would have a great 2005 and then get the hell out of Blacksburg. Every time he does something good on the field -- and his fourth quarter was great -- I don't even get a paragraph to talk about it before I have to condemn something else stupid and/or asinine. Unfortunately, he wasn't good enough to declare, he knows it, and so we have to put up with another year of him. I'm tired of being embarrassed by the #1 or #2 public face of my university, I'm tired of our fans blindly defending him and buying #5 jerseys as if Vick were worth idolizing, and I'm tired of Frank Beamer mimicking Bobby Bowden's old "It's not like he shot the President" routine.
That said, the first-quarter refereeing was beyond atrocious. Somebody was out to send a message to the Hokies. We got penalized plenty for stuff we didn't do; while I'd hesitate to call it fair for Vick's stomp to go unnoticed, maybe things balanced out.
