Super Joe Calls Jets On The Carpet

Eric Mangini is the new head coach of the New York Jets, but Joe Namath is telling the New York Times he's got some questions about the previous holder of the job:

"I'm more concerned with how we got here," Namath said. He added: "I think there is too much of a smoke screen going up. I don't think it's fair to the fans what's taking place with the coaching issue. To say it's a family issue and that what happens in the family stays in the family is really dismissive. I'm really frustrated. Where is the truth?"

(snip)

"I don't think we've been dealt with righteously here. This issue is just mind-boggling to me."

Before I write anything we need to fix that last quote. Anybody who has listened to Joe for any amount of time over the last few decades knows that he would pronounce "boggling" with an extra syllable.

You know, "bog-a-ling."

That aside, though I'm beginning to have some mixed feelings about the departure of Herm Edwards, having Joe call out Jets management can't be anything but a good thing. It's sort of like when Wayne Gretzky has a complaint about the NHL: Really, is Gary Bettman going to have the nerve to fine the greatest hockey player in the history of the game?

Like that's ever going to fly.

Joe plays a similar role in the history of the Jets, as he's not only the best player in the history of the franchise, he's the only link to the team's cherished place in the history of the NFL.

Think about it: How many times have you seen Joe's face in an NFL-produced montage about the history of pro football? A lot. In fact, probably a lot more often than a number of players who enjoyed longer and more successful careers than Namath.

So when Joe opens his mouth about the Jets, the team has no choice to listen -- after all, Joe earned it with Super Bowl III and the two knees he sacrificed for the good of the franchise.

Now if we could onnly get Joe to read this (PDF).

The Jets, sadly, are just the Cardinals with a banner. Which, even more sadly, is more than you say for my Browns. What really stopped me with this news is that Mangini hadn't even been conceived when Namath won the Supe.
