Olie Cuffs Ovechkin

While the Washington Post has often used the position of Caps beat writer as a training ground for future talent (both Jason LaConfora and ESPN's Rachael Alexander covered the team), Dave Fay has held down the fort at the Washington Times for as long as I can remember.

And anecdotes like this one from yesterday's paper are the reason why:

The highlight -- low-light for goalies -- of yesterday's drill at Piney Orchard may have been when [Alexander] Ovechkin playfully scored almost at will against Olie Kolzig, then belly flopped on the ice in a fit of laughter.

"Where was that last night," Kolzig shot back, referring to a 4-3 shootout loss to Florida in which Ovechkin did not score.

Ovechkin has been shut down in four of the last five games with teams playing him very close, hindering his movement and limiting his space. With the Caps having so few other good offensive weapons, it is a smart and so far successful ploy.

Might this be a good time to mention that Caps head coach Glen Hanlon benched Ovechkin for 14 minutes last night? Thanks to Japers' Rink for the pointer.
