Hasek Returns To Detroit

That's right, Dominik Hasek is returning to Detroit after signing a one-year contract with the Red Wings.

I'm guessing Ken Holland didn't like the asking price for any of the goalies reportedly on the market, and opted for a short-term solution.

No word yet on salary, though it looks like the Wings are about $4 million and change under the cap. With somebody like Belfour getting $1.5 million from the Panthers, you'd have to guess that Hasek is in that sort of range, perhaps lower with performance bonuses.

More later.

TSN is reporting now that the salary will be for $750,000, with incentives.

Even if I don't agree with the signing, you can't shake a stick at a salary like that. It's definitely a calculated gamble, and leaves them with enough wiggle room to make any moves before or during the season starts, I think.

What was Holland thinking? Here isa former top-shelf goalie that, in his later years, has essentially quit on three consecutive teams when he was most needed. Maybe he thinks Osgood will be well-rested by the time Hasek declares himself unfit to play next spring?

I think it would be a better idea to bury the hatchet with Legace & bring him back as a backup to Osgood. At least you know Legace won't fizzle until the playoffs.

This is another bone-headed move in an offseason of bone-headed moves by Holland.

By signing Hasek, he's basically told Osgood that he has no confidence in him, and also told Jimmy Howard that he can forget seeing playing time this year (which he probably should be getting). That will mean Jimmy Howard will be down in GR, and it basically tells Stefan Liv that he has no chance in hell in the DET organization, even just in GR.

It's a horrible, horrible move at any salary -- especially when Holland is still quite frankly missing one or two NHL-caliber forwards. It also makes the Markov signing look dumb (even though I like Markov) because it was needless and Markov's salary should really be going to a scoring forward...

Besides, how does it make any sense anyways? They let Legace go because he was supposedly a cancer in the lockerroom? Well, what the devil is Hasek other than possibly the biggest goalie clubhouse cancer of his generation?!??!!
