An Interview With "Killer" Kevin Kaminski

In case you missed it last week, On Frozen Blog fronted a fantastic interview with ex-Cap Kevin Kaminski last Friday.

If you don't remember Kaminski, that's a shame (for fans of the New York Islanders, think Steve Webb). His game was all guts, and he was a fan favorite from his first moment on the ice in Washington. As it turns out, I first became familiar with Kevin's career as a junior hockey player when I read Ken Dryden's Home Game, a followup of sorts from his classic, The Game.

In Home Game -- which was a print companion to a CBC documentary -- Dryden and co-author Roy MacGregor spent a lot of time with Kaminski, and they could see just how much "Killer" would have to sacrifice to stay in the league. And sacrifice he did. Here's hoping his job as head coach with the Youngstown Steelheads leads to something bigger and better.

Kevin -- we'll always remember you here in Washington -- down to every last snarl and bonecrushing hit. Thanks for the memories.

I loved Kaminski as a grinder, a bit less as a fighter, but what really endeared him to me...this was when my seat was right behind the Caps bench, there was a family that sat there often, they had a little boy about three or four years old. And that child loved Kevin. He couldn't really say"Kaminski" but he'd be jumping and cheering "Kevin Ka-mi-ci!" Kevin noticed, and every night during warmups, he'd always stop and wave to the kid, give him a high-five over the glass, maybe hand him a puck.

I'm sure that kid will be a hockey fan forever.
