Local Sports That Aren't So Local
Liz Chang, better known as D.C. Sports Chick, is wondering why in the world the folks at Comcast SportsNet DC seemed to want to bury the news of a big comeback win by the Nats in Arizona: Here are the stories of the Sunday night 10:00 p.m. broadcast in order: - Tiger Woods (People care about golf? When it's not even happening here? Who are these tools?) - Eagles vs. Ravens (that happens tomorrow) - Redskins vs. Titans (that happened yesterday) - Michael Vick (like that hasn't been going on for months) *Commercial break* - Red Sox vs. Orioles - FINALLY, the Nationals - UVA football (season doesn't start for a few weeks) As somebody who was born and raised in the New York area, I'm used to having my home teams all over the place. Something tells me I'm not alone, which has got to make things difficult for the folks at Comcast. UPDATE: Couldn't help but notice this post from Ted Leonsis that tracks in a similar direction. Turns out Ted was listening to SportsTalk 980 on his way to the United-Galaxy match on Thursday night and didn't like what he heard once the hosts of The Sports Reporters started bashing Soccer: Has SportsTalk 980 lost sight of the fact that the fastest growing communities in our area Jamaican, Latino and Asian -- all love soccer and that as a media property, they need to expand their base of coverage and remain relevant? Don't they realize that moms and young women are the audience that advertisers covet the most as they control discretionary spending in a household? As a programmer and someone who has grown up in scaling media businesses, I don't get the fact that the sports leader here in DC would go out of its way to NOT embrace soccer or hockey or any other sport that delivers an audience. SportsTalk 980 is basically a sports portal for our fragmented sports loving universe. I would hope that they can find a way to connect with the broadest group of listeners as possible. Don't forget, the Caps were on SportsTalk 980 last season. I wonder if they're listening over there? Thanks to Bobby Boswell for the pointer. ANOTHER UPDATE: The DCenters has some more thoughts. And Matt Johnson tries to offer some explanations. IT ISN'T STOPPING: More from Caps Nut. Trackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: CommentsSure, they report on the home teams (even the Baltimore ones) and that's fine. I understand there's a lot of teams in the area, and it can take a while to catch up on everyone. But talking about Tiger and Michael Vick ahead of the home teams? That's when I get angry. Posted by:
