Thursday's Blogging Roundup
The Caps continued their winning ways against the Flames as Ovie scored a pair, including the game winner with under 2 minutes to go. Last night was also the debut of the "Ovechkam". With his 2 goals it certainly didn't seem like the OvechKam affected him at all. Or if it did it was certainly in a good way. On Frozen Blog has a few screenshots of what it looked like. I for one would have liked to see the game on the bigger picture and Ovie on the smaller. But I guess the whole point of the OvechKam is to see Ovie himself. I wasn't able to watch the game with OvechKam, so I can't say how it was overall. But I can't imagine it is something that will happen often. As Leonsis said earlier, it's a team game, so cover the team.
Looking ahead, The Peerless gives an idea of what the stretch run will be like for the Caps.
The Caps caught a break tonight, as both teams in front of them – Buffalo and Philadelphia – lost in regulation. They kept pace with Carolina, which won in Chicago this evening. The Caps remain seven points behind Carolina with one game in hand and two games remaining against the Hurricanes. They need all six of those points to have any chance at all of winning the Southeast.
Five points out…11 games to play. Philly still has three games against the Penguins, two against the Devils, two against the Rangers. Buffalo still has Ottawa twice, Montreal twice, and Carolina. Of course, the Caps still have that six-game road trip coming.
This could yet be an interesting finish.
Interesting indeed. Barry Melrose doesn't believe anyone but the Sabres can slide into the playoffs at this point. But the Caps are an explosive team, and can make a run at the 8-spot or the Southeast lead if they can pull it together. But with a division-heavy schedule to end the season, they need to start beating their divisional rivals. All season it seems like they've been able to beat strong teams like Ottawa, New Jersey, and Montreal, but can't win against Florida, Atlanta, and Carolina. That needs to change if they want to play into late April.
