A Prayer To The Soccer Gods: The EPL On ESPN

Over the past few weeks, I've watched more than a few matches during Euro 2008, and I think it's been a spectacular showcase for just how good Soccer can look in high definition. Yes, I know that HD Net has been showing MLS in high def for a while now, and that ESPN 2's Thursday night coverage of MLS is always in high def as well. It's just that seeing the games from Switzerland and Austria in HD day after day for the better part of two weeks has brought home in a profound way just what we're missing -- especially when you are forced to downshift into the standard def coverage on both Fox Soccer Channel and GolTV.

We've been hearing for a while now how ESPN is interested in airing the EPL on Saturdays, and as far as I'm concerned it's something that can't happen soon enough. In my mind, I understand that the standard def images I'm seeing on FSC and GolTV aren't any different than what I was watching before. Still, whenever I stop by either of those channels, I can't help but feel like I'm watching a match while underwater. And once I'm overcome with that feeling, I can't help but reach for the remote and change the channel. And the last time I clicked over to Setanta, the Irish-based satellite sports channel that's only available in standard def, I called up DirecTV and canceled it from my lineup.
