Hawks Fire Theo's Babysitter

Looks like oft-troubled Chicago Blackhawks Winger Theo Fleury has one less person to blame for his problems now, at least according to this item at ESPN.com:

The Chicago Blackhawks have dismissed Jim Jenkins, Fleury's sponsor in his substance-abuse treatment program. Blackhawks general manager Mike Smith made the move last week but didn't confirm it until Sunday.

Smith said he talked to doctors in Fleury's substance-abuse program, and decided the effectiveness of Jenkins' role had come to an end.

Jenkins was present at Blackhawks' practices and games, had locker-room privileges and was Fleury's roommate on the road. He was replaced by a Blackhawks teammate before his dismissal.

The firing came almost one month after Fleury was involved in an altercation at a Columbus, Ohio, strip club. Fleury apologized to his teammates after the incident, but was not punished by the league.

After the strip club story hit the wires, I was wondering just what Jenkins was doing for his paycheck. In any case, as much sympathy as I've been able to feel for Fleury over the past year or so, I'm finding my patience is wearing a bit thin -- and it seems as if the Hawks agree. I have to wonder out loud if Smith might not just try to void the remaining years on Fleury's contract after the season is up.
