Burk: Masters Should Be Cancelled In Case Of War
Just when you thought Martha Burk couldn't sink any lower in her pursuit of any and all types of publicity in her quest to get Augusta National to go co-ed, we get this courtesy of the Washington Post's Leonard Shapiro: Martha Burk said yesterday she would like to believe Augusta National Golf Club would cancel the Masters if the United States goes to war in Iraq in the coming days. But if the tournament goes on as scheduled starting April 10, she and her organization still intend to be in Augusta to protest the club's all-male membership policy, though likely in a more subdued manner. Oh please. Here's what Augusta National had to say in response: Augusta National spokesman Glenn Greenspan said in a statement yesterday that, "planning continues for this year's Masters Tournament, and just like other major sporting events, we will be evaluating the situation as it unfolds. But for Ms. Burk to use the possibility of war as an opportunity to inject herself into the news again is the lowest form of self-promotion." At this point, it seems that all Burks need to do is cough in public, and it will wind up with some sort of coverage in the national press. It doesn't hurt that Shapiro, an unashamed supporter of Burk's when he's been on-air at Washington sports radio station, WTEM, has been in the driver's seat when it comes to the Post's coverage either.
