Baseball Stops at the District Line...

Peter Angelos may have begun his final descent into madness. During an interview on WBAL radio yesterday, the Orioles owner brought out his strongest argument for keeping baseball out of D.C.: “There are no real baseball fans in D.C.—that’s a fiction.” Angelos said the “real” baseball fans were in suburban Maryland, and they were, presumably by divine right, his fan base.

When Angelos says something that stupid, it makes me think that D.C. actually has a better chance of landing the Expos. Say what you will about Bud Selig—he’s not in the business of publicly denigrating the fan base. Angelos loses credibility with Selig and the other owners when he tries to deny reality.

And, the Expos issue aside, Angelos’ statement betrays an important fact—he’s a trial lawyer, not an entrepreneur. The bulk of his wealth did not come from productive achievement, but from leaching off the production of others. Angelos doesn’t believe in earning customer loyalty; he thinks it should be handed to him because he’s the biggest bully on the block.

“There are no real baseball fans in D.C.—that’s a fiction.”

That's obvious from the fact that the Orioles store and ticket office was put in downtown Rockville, not on Connecticut Avenue at Farragut Squa--oh, wait. Never mind.

Geez, I hate Angelos. Plus, anyone else smell a racial angle to that remark? The echo sounds a little like "Black folks don't like baseball."

Scum-sucking asbestos leech.

Nah, he's merely in the business of publicly denigrating the game itself.
