One Step Closer. . .
After testifying before a Federal grand jury investigating BALCO and their involvement with professional athletes and steroid use, Gary Sheffield decided to tell all to Sports Illustrated*: In testimony before a federal grand jury last year, Sheffield admitted to unwittingly having used a steroid cream -- saying he didn't know it contained anything illegal -- that he got from BALCO after [Barry] Bonds introduced him to the lab's products, according to a report in the Oct. 11 issue of Sports Illustrated. I'll take Sheffield at his word (including where he indicates that Bonds is a real egomaniac -- what a surprise), but as I've noted before, in the steroids game, plausible deniability isn't a bug, it's a feature. Now, does this prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Bonds -- who during a point in his career where most men begin to see their performance at the plate taper off, began his assault on most of baseball's career offensive records -- used steroids himself, knowingly or not? No, it doesn't. But the circumstantial evidence keeps piling up, and it's not looking good. Keep this all in mind next season as Bonds, who after all was recently randomly tested for steroids, begins his final assault on Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron's places in the record books.
