R.I.P. Ken Caminiti

Dead of a heart attack in the Bronx at age 41. Why he was in the Bronx, nobody, or at least his agent, can say.

It was only eight years ago that Caminiti was National League MVP. But it was just two years ago that he told Sports Illustrated that 50 percent of Major League players used steroids.

Did steroids contribute to his death? Who knows. Besides, the former Major League third baseman was also known to use Cocaine, the use of which is widely acknowledged to put abusers at risk for heart failure.

What we do know is that Caminiti gave us a window into the world of steroid use in professional sports. And we also know that after years of stratospheric home run totals, the top home run hitter in the Majors this season couldn't break 50 in the same year random testing was put in place.

Draw your own conclusions.

I would assume that his steroid use, in some way, shape, or form, contributed to his death at 41. After his recent violation by using cocaine again, who knows what he was up to of late - but is it going to take someone actually dying directly from steroids before people get their heads on straight?

I doubt steroids had much to do with his death. I say that with the "wait a second" hand-gesture that it doesn't mean I don't think steroids can contribute to health problems and possibly cause death, but Caminiti didn't dabble in cocaine, he was heavy into it according to most detailed reports; and was just sentenced to more jail time for testing positive (and violating parole) recently. The story also notes he admits to being an alcoholic. I'm not one for ever excusing steroids, I just think there are a few things much higher up on the list of what probably caused him to die.

That all being said, no matter what the circumstance, it's always sad to see someone so young pass away.

Hey, people still smoke, and tobacco never helped anyone hit 50 home runs or run the 100 in less than 10 seconds. People aren't smart.
