Dissing The Great One

Taking his turn to rant about steroids, ESPN's Peter Gammons takes a shot at an innocent bystander:

What we do now believe is that when Barry Bonds passes Babe Ruth sometime this spring, it will be greeted not by cheers, but jeers, or worse, disinterest. When Bonds passes Henry Aaron in early 2006, we will be reminded that what once was the most regal of all sports records will have been relegated to the level of the all-time NHL goals leader.

If you're upset with Bonds, that's fine as far as it goes. But why the Hell in God's name does Gammons have to slander Wayne Gretzky in the process?

Yeah, that Gretzky, he's just an historical footnote.

UPDATE: Click here for David Pinto's take on the rest of Gammons' piece.

He's not just slandering Gretzky but the entire sport of Hockey. He's basically saying Hockey is third class and any records set within it are a far-removed sideshow.

I guess all those years of Bruins ineptitude have taken their toll on Peter.

Shame on Pete. He's gotta represent Massachusetts and respect puck.

Outrageous.

What do you expect from a doddering old donkey from a BYGONE era...time to retire that nag...

Maybe I'll do a CSI Medblogs on what type of atrophy and internal derangement must be present inside his aged skull...

I think years of appearing on middle aged female's screen savers have finally gone to the head of Peter Gammons.

Or, the Red Sox just won the World Series, so he just felt like he could tell the hockey world to get bent. What does he care?!? The Sawx won!

Bonds isn't in Gretzky's league achievement-wise. That was a stupid thing for Gammons to write.

Gammons is right on the money! By any measure the eighties was one of the weakest eras in NHL hockey. Using a win devation analysis or goals per game averages Gretzky's numbers are hugely inflated. The true measure of Gretzky is seen in the 90s when his numbers dropped precipitously. Howe outscored him straight up in his second decade.

Steve Sailer shows that Bonds' numbers are also a joke.

"...from the age of 36 through 39 he went on a four-year tear averaging 257, which is better than Babe Ruth's single best season (1920) of 255, when he was 25."
