Post-Deadline Analysis

Chris Zelkovich of the Toronto Star has a review of the performance of TSN and SportsNet from the NHL trade deadline, and what he saw wasn't pretty.

But what caught my eye was this entry:

2:35 p.m. Eklund says Dainius Zubrus has been traded to Buffalo, which amazingly turns out to be true.

Looks like the broken clock was right twice yesterday, but was he really? Zelkovich reported that Eklund had the Zubrus story at 2:35 p.m., but who's to say that he didn't just read the report off of Tarik el-Bashir's blog that reported the Zubrus deal at 2:33 p.m.?

I spoke with Greg Wyshynski of The Fourth Period at length last night, and he noted a number of instances where Eklund had plundered original reporting from there without mentioning it as a source.

Also mentioned by Greg last night: Eklund blunders that had Bill Guerin going to the Islanders -- a rumor that was passed around as the result of a caller to Mike and the Mad Dog on WFAN merely suggesting that Guerin would be a good pickup for the Isles; and an erroneous report that the Canadiens had placed Alexei Kovalev on waivers.

I'd like to think the wheels came off the bus yesterday, but I've been wrong before.

Thanks to the ever-reliable J.P. for passing this along.
